A Mage (Fan Art)

The mage is a class specialized in ranged combat, dealing damage and supporting allies. They use magical staffs as weapons, allowing them to attack at a distance without the use of ammo. Their normal strikes lack strength, they cannot evade much and also have lower life. However, their huge mana pools and versatility makes them a tough hard to predict class.

The main attribute for mages is Intelligence. It gives them more Mana, spell resistance, staff damage and power focus. Second in importance is Concentration, since it gives the mage higher hit chance and power focus. The mage, unlike the other classes, gains 3 additional trees after choosing subclass. They also get more discipline and skill points.

There are 4 skill branches in the mage tree.

  • Mental: Basic damage dealing magic and crowd control spells
  • Mana Control: Spells that improve the spell casting and mana pool for the mage, as well as protective shields
  • Staff Mastery: Gives the mage additional uses for his staff (damage bonuses and similar)
  • Enchantments: Allows the mage to strengthen his allies and weaken his enemies

    Splinter Wall is a mage power that deals piercing damage over time to any nearby enemy. Though the damage may seem insignificant against a single opponent, and can be mitigated through armor and defensive powers, it can be devastating when used against a group of enemies.     Mana communion can be recognized as a small cone of blue light that appears at the mage's feet. For allies in the area of effect having their mana recharged, the mana amount will show every second above their heads in blue text.

    Note that for level 3 and above (with Insightful, it starts at level 2), mana gained by the mage will be more than the mana cost of the spell.

    Mana pylon always confuses beginner players because it's a bit hard to understand. It gives a "magic barrier" similar to the spell Energy Barrier to all nearby players (although not to the caster), but one that gains in strength over time. For more information, see Magic Barrier (Game Mechanic).

    If an ally moves out of the area of effect of this spell, he will lose all barrier points accumulated; entering the area again will restart the barrier point accumulation. Several instances of this spell can be activated by different players at the same time, increasing both speed and amount of stacking per second. However to limit the power of this there is a maximum barrier limit of 2500.

    This spell is useful for the backlines in an open field battle, but requires the mage to remain as still as possible to avoid removing the barrier from his allies. Since not only mages, but the whole backline, tend to move a lot this power is not often used here. Though it is seen when the party is expecting the enemy to cast area spells on a certain space, for example when attacking a fort door. However the 3 aura limit is another thing that discourages use of this spell, since more important auras may be needed instead.

    Since Mana Pylon does not affect the caster, a conjurer can also cast it when under Sanctuary.

    Subclasses

    Subclasses for Mages are the Warlock (Offensive) and the Conjurer (Supportive). Warlocks are specialized in damage dealing magic with devastating Area of Effect spells and debuffing the enemies, and conjurers specialize in protection magic, summoning and healing.

    Warlock

  • Arcania: Offensive magic using the material forces of the world. Causes physical damage.
  • Necromancy: Dark magic allows strong weakening effects, including the only health draining spells of the game.
  • Elements: Damage dealing and crowd control effects, using elemental forces. Spells based on fire, ice and lightning.
  • Conjurer

  • Life: Healing magic. Also used to resurrect dead allies or protect them.
  • Sorcery: Strong defensive magic, allowing the conjurer to shield himself and his allies.
  • Summoning: Allows the conjurer to summon various creatures to fight for him for a limited time.
